Hello Fans and Friends of the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame and MuseumWe are pleased to announce the teen winner of the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame 2023 High School Student Guitar Competition. Sixteen-year-old Maddie Yates of North Yarmouth, a junior at Greely High School in Cumberland, placed first in the 2023 statewide contest open to Maine high school teens. Yates will receive a brand new Taylor guitar donated by Northern Kingdom Music, Dana Flood, of Bangor. A multi-talented, budding young musician, Yates first became interested in the ukulele at the age of 10, and a year later progressed into playing the guitar. A student at 317 Main Community Music Center in Yarmouth, Maddie plays guitar with “Flight 317”, a student bluegrass ensemble under the guidance of instructor Carter Logan, a renowned bluegrass musician and founding member of the Maine-based bluegrass band, Jerks of Grass. Maddie is very active in Greely High School’s choral music program, led by Choral Director, Sarah Bailey. Maddie has performed in Greely’s student musicals and in the youth chorus with the Portland Symphony Orchestra in its production of “Carmina Burana” at Merrill Auditorium this past fall. Yates also plays piano. She has been seen on WCSH 6 NewsCenter Maine’s “207” evening TV show. Yates’s parents are Marie McCarthy and Joanna Yates of North Yarmouth, Maine. Maddie will perform on stage with Hall of Fame Inductees at the 46th Annual Maine Country Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Show on Sunday, May 21st at 1 PM, at the Silver Spur, Mechanic Falls, Maine. This year’s inductees, Johnny Hiland and Doug Baker, plus a Special Group of eleven others will be honored. A lively concert showcasing Hall of Fame living legends, and performances by Miss Yates, as well as last year’s student guitar winner, Owen Field of Hampden Academy, will follow. Update on the proposed Casco Bay Trail: Here’s an update on the 25-mile anchor of the Casco Bay Trail: a vision for a rail trail corridor from Portland to Auburn. Our next step is with the Maine Legislature. The corridor CANNOT become a trail unless legislators vote to make it one. Yarmouth State Representative Art Bell introduced a bill, LD 209, that provides that authorization. We need your help to get it passed! As soon as the public hearing date on LD 209 is scheduled, I’ll share this info here. We need you to testify in person at the public hearing in Augusta, if possible. Share your own rail trail experiences and how this transformative initiative is so important to our area. Written testimony may be submitted, too. Follow Casco Bay Trails on Facebook for the latest information: https://www.facebook.com/cascobaytrail | |
