WHY ARE THERE TREES TAGGED IN THE NORTH FIELD?

The North Yarmouth Parks Committee is undertaking a project, in collaboration with the State of Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands,
to maintain the 7-acre area of Chandler Brook Preserve known as North Field, as shrubland habitat. This type of habitat is unique
and it is disappearing across the state as development and the growth of succession forests takes over many of the old farm fields.
Shrublands support many habitat-specific animals and birds that are showing rapid decline in Maine.

As part of its comprehensive management plan, the Parks Committee is selectively cutting trees in the North Field to help maintain
it as shrubland habitat. Many of these trees are Eastern White Pine. Eastern White Pine trees grow rapidly and are considered a
pioneer species as shrubland reverts to forest. The purpose of cutting the trees is prevent the forestation of the field. The cutting
process will take place over a period of three years and will only be done in the fall after all birds and animals have successfully
fledged their young.

The Parks Committee welcomes your feedback. Please contact us at nyparks@northyarmouth.org
