Searching for the "Oldest" citizen in North Yarmouth

boston post cane head

North Yarmouth’s Boston Post Cane must once again be awarded to the “oldest” citizen in town. The tradition of the Boston Post Cane was started in August 1909 by Boston Post Publisher, Edwin A. Grozier. He distributed some 600 canes to New England towns, which were to be awarded to the Oldest Citizen in town and at his or her death to be transmitted to the next oldest living citizen.
To be eligible to receive the honor a person must:
1) Be the oldest living person residing in North Yarmouth at the time designation is made;
2) Must have resided in the Town of North Yarmouth within the last five years and a U.S. Citizen not less than 15 of the last 40 years.
3) Must be able and willing to receive the honor in person or through a family member
Please complete a nomination form  or contact the Clerk's Office (207) 829-3705 (townclerk@northyarmouth.org) if you know of a citizen that meets the above criteria.

COMMUNITY NEWS
confort wagon
Skyline Farm Carriage Museum’s current exhibit "The Evolution of Comfort” tracks the developing technology and style from early vehicles, such as its Comfort “Waggon” dating back to the late 1700’s when George Washington was President, through to the end of the horse-drawn carriage era when automobiles came on the scene and Teddy Roosevelt was our 26th President. By Roosevelt’s time, carriages offered leaf springs, inflatable tires, and plush seats, all features that carry over to today so we can ride… in Comfort.

The museum, located at 95 The Lane, North Yarmouth, is open for public viewing on Sundays, through April 2, 1-4 p.m. or by appointment. Free admission; donations are appreciated. Dress warmly.

For more information, email info@skylinefarm.org. Skyline Farm is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization.

Speak Out Competition

The Cumberland / North Yarmouth Lions Club is hosting their annual Speak Out competition on March 27th, 2023. The goal is to provide high school students with an opportunity to think about important issues facing them & their community. Speaker contestants will prepare a 5-minute speech on an important issue facing them, our community, the State, or the Nation. Upon completion, speakers will be asked one question each by two questioners. Speeches are scored by three judges based on content, presentation, and adhering to time limits. The local winner will move on to compete at the district Speak Out competition. This is a great opportunity for students to practice their public speaking, win cash prizes, and receive local and regional recognition.

Please see Mr. Curry at GHS for details and visit the Lions website for contest rules. Interested students will need to sign-up in advance of the competition.

call it big night march 11th

Saturday, March 11 at 10 a.m.
In-person at Prince Memorial Library
For curious adults and families. No registration required.
Offered in partnership with Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust

Every spring, conditions come together to form one of the most eruptive wildlife migrations in the world – right in our backyards. The warm, rainy nights of spring bring frogs and salamanders out in droves, creating what is referred to as “big nights”. However, many of these migrants face trouble as they meet one of the newest habitats on the landscape — roads.

This talk will introduce the community science project Maine Big Night, a project that anyone can participate in to collect data and help migrating amphibians in roadways. Amphibian natural history, results from previous years, and compelling stories will also be included.

Greg LeClair is a Ph.D. candidate at UMaine, where he studies ecology and environmental science. He started the Maine Big Night: Amphibian Migration Monitoring project in 2018.
