MSAD #51 District News

msad 51 news

As you know, the referendum for a proposed new primary school failed in November, which means we are back to looking at all options to relieve the current and projected enrollment increases.

In the meantime, we need to make some changes to the campus in order to better design the learning environment and allow for appropriate play spaces and green space for the short-term, given that we have 21 modular rooms on the campus grounds at this time, with more expected next year to meet projected growth. Over the next few weeks, a short-term plan will be developed and presented to the Board on Feb. 6 for addressing enrollment for the next 3-5 years on campus. Even if a referendum were to be held again within the next year, it would take a year of planning, followed by 2-3 years of construction before a new school would open.

Recently, the Board of Directors extended the option agreement on the land at 80 Gray Rd in North Yarmouth for another 5 years, if needed, where the proposed school was to be built. This action is intended to keep all options on the table going forward. Many thanks to landowner Ben Grover for working with the Board on extending this option, at minimal cost to the SAD.
